Digital North Project

As part of the Digital North Project I was able to see first hand how appropriate pedagogy, paired with efficient learning tools and resouces, along with creative assessment and evaluation tools could assist students in thriving and feeling a sense of belonging in school.

  1. I identified a challenge with getting students to school on time.

  2. I created a cross-curricular unit with social studies, language, math, and science and used Minecraft as the tool.

  3. I scheduled the hands-on Minecraft time right around entry for 50 minutes.

  4. Students either came on time or missed Minecraft time.

  5. Students changed their behaviour and saw the benefits of coming on time.

  6. Students were assessed for Science, Social Studies, and math through videos and demonstrations rather than leaning on reading and writing activities, to allow our struggling readers/writers a chance to shine.

Empower Reading - Intermediate

I show compassion for those students needing reading interventions in upper junior and intermediate classes. We develop trust and respect first, so that authentic learning can take place. I validate that reading and writing in English is hard, and strive to show them examples of that often. We celebrated successes by arranging for quiet, private demonstrations of learning for their classroom teachers.
